The first beer we chose to highlight for Shovel’s Beer Month was Modern Times’ Fortunate Island. We weren’t actually planning on doing this one, but it immediately the branding stuck out of the crowd thanks to its brown, yellow and orange colors – do those colors remind you of anything else that is unique to San Diego? The Padres of course! The font of the Modern Times is also classic, yet modern, just like the Padres’ uniforms of the ’60s, ’70s and early ’80s.

And now for the taste: I was a bit shocked because it had the hoppiness of an IPA but was smooth and easy to drink like a more traditional wheat beer. The colors of the can paired with the classic layout and the refreshing taste reminds me of being at a sunny baseball game on a Saturday afternoon.

Have any of you tried this beer or this brewer before? Even if you haven’t, we’d love to hear your take on this design.
