Hi, nice to meet you. We’re Shovel Creative. And now introducing Hype Media.
Times they are-a changin’. Since I caravanned out to Boulder CO for my graphic design internship in summer of 03′, an entire generation has emerged that never knew what it was like NOT to have internet. A device which is now glued to one’s hand gives answers to any possible question in seconds. My 1 year old nephew knows who I am through a Skype call on a computer screen. It’s pretty rad. So now. What’s a print-educated, logo-making, catalog-designing graphic design girl suppose to do in this evolving on-line centered world? Meet some pretty nerdy kick-butt tech geeks. That’s what. Who also appreciate good, effective design which comes from digging deep into one’s brand. Tech geek #1. Meet Gus. Our in-house web developer who gave his girlfriend a t-shirt for Christmas that read “You’re the CSS in my HTML”. He lives on mainstream energy drinks and always remains positive when given a funky new design element to program—”Uh Gus, you can do that right?”. “Oh yeah, I’ll figure it out”. And he does. It’s awesome. Tech geek #2. Meet Iain. Where do I begin. Iain will not appear on camera for this fun interactive blog idea I had because quote “a camera guy being on camera is like marrying your cousin”. Iain owns Hype Media and produces with his team all of the video you see on this site. One word for Iain: determined. 3 months ago he decided to run his first marathon in Hawaii. 2 months ago he did it. And though he won’t let me post his time, it was in the 3.5 hr range. Sorry Iain. I would also like to throw an honorable mention out there to Rhea—our devoted project manager who has been with us for 2 years and her office dog Bella. They keep all of us playful creatives in check, on-time and organized. Well, Rhea more than Bella. You get the point.
So there you have it. A small happy family of creatives and tech geeks that make up Shovel (print & web) and Hype (video & motion—there’s more team members here, we’ll introduce them soon). And now instead of being just a print-educated, logo-making, catalog-designing graphic design girl who can’t keep up with the on-line pace, I’m part of a team that’s leading it. Let’s go.
